First Impressions of Changsha

I’m really enjoying living in Changsha so far. It’s a relatively large city with a nice mix of modern and traditional Chinese culture.

I am working in a Private International Kindergarten teaching English and have completed my first full week. I have enjoyed it so far; it is challenging work but has its rewards. Most of the children seem to have adapted well to having me in their classroom, and shout “TEACHER JAYE!” when they see me, which is reassuring. I mostly play games with them and try to excite and motivate them to speak English during the day.

I have been into the city a few times since I arrived. I always love the hustle and bustle of a new city – finding new places to explore and being able to wander around. Most of the time I pay no attention to people staring at me, but occasionally I have looked up to see people taking photos of me on my phone. This always makes me laugh!

There are a lot of bars around the Walking Street area of the city, one of which I really liked called Helen’s Bar. It gets pretty crowded in the evening but it’s a good atmosphere to enjoy with friends. The Grape Beer is also really nice!

      1. That’ll be great! I find it very fascinating to hear stories similar to yours where people get out of their comfort zone and immerse themselves into another culture and embrace it. I hope you have a great time in China!
